In a strategic initiative aimed at excellence in dam safety, Aliança Energia received representatives of the Itaipu Binacional Hydroelectric Power Plant for a series of technical meetings and field visits, held between October 23 and 29. The objective was to promote a technical benchmarking, with the exchange of experiences on the installation of instrumentation and the improvement of the monitoring of structures.

Aliança has already completed the installation of complementary instruments in all its plants. Itaipu, on the other hand, intends to carry out a similar activity in its dam, sought the partnership to share learning and good practices.

The program included a prior technical meeting for presentation and technical discussions and a visit to Aliança Energia’s headquarters in Belo Horizonte, as well as visits to the Amador Aguiar I, Amador Aguiar II and Funil HPP plants. On these occasions, Itaipu engineers were able to visit the site of the installation of the instruments, the challenges faced in the field, especially in rockfill dams, and the solutions adopted by Aliança. Aspects such as the specificities of the installation, the objectives of the measurements and the necessary adaptations to local conditions were discussed.

The Itaipu team was composed of Josiele Patias and Luis Enrique Gonzalez Velasquez, engineers in the area of Dam Safety, and Rodrigo de Lima Rodrigues, engineer at Itaipu Parquetec.

Also present was the team from the Civil Engineering Center of Aliança Energia, composed of Leonardo Teixeira de Aquino, Ana Paula Borges Marcelino, Cláudio Casagrande Roberto, Larissa Constantino, Rita de Cássia Souza Sá and Cleber José de Carvalho.

During the meetings, good practices were shared such as stability analysis, foundation parameters, instrument positioning, reading processes, data treatment and storage systems, in addition to the application of probabilistic analysis.

The technical exchange revealed promising opportunities, such as the adoption of probabilistic data analysis and the joint development of Research and Development projects, focusing on technical feasibility and applicability in dam stability studies.

Cleber José de Carvalho, civil engineer at Aliança, emphasized the importance of the meeting:

“We can highlight the importance of the exchange between the technical staff of the companies in search of best practices, technological evolution, improvement in monitoring and, consequently, improvement in the safety of dams. The topic of dam safety is extremely relevant for the entrepreneur and for society, in addition to being a legal requirement.”

As a result, a visit by Aliança Energia team to the Itaipu HPP is planned, continuing the benchmarking. Topics of interest include document control, in-depth probabilistic analysis, levels of instrumentation control and database structuring.

This partnership reinforces the commitment of the two institutions to water security and the responsible management of their infrastructures, promoting technical advances that benefit society as a whole.
