Wind Sources in the Southeast-MG

PD09344-1703

Scientific criteria and methods for sizing wind farms in tropical atmosphere regions and modeling the systemic impacts of the insertion of wind sources in the Southeast region of Brazil.

Objective

Develop criteria and methodologies necessary for the insertion of wind power in the energy scenario of the Southeast region of the country, considering the specific characteristics of tropical and intertropical winds and the impacts of locational signals on the selection of connection to the National Interconnected System (SIN). It is also necessary to consider the identification and pricing of the benefits associated with the proximity of generation to the load center to the detriment of costs inherent to the implementation of these parks in the Northeast and South regions.

Result

Adapt to the climate of Brazil the computational models used for the development of wind farms and allow an adjustment of the parameters used in the mathematical models for dimensioning the expansion of energy supply. The aim is to provide better technical results for the projects and for the electrical system and, consequently, to optimize the environmental impacts caused by the need to expand and reinforce the system for the flow of electricity.

Duration

  • Step 1 (PD 1703) 60 months from December 2017.
  • Step 2 (PD 2303) 12 months from April 2023.

Category and theme

Applied Research. It mainly deals with the theme of Alternative Sources.

Executor

Horizonte Renewable Energies (HER) and the Energy Institute of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV Energia).

Estimated Cost

  • Stage 1 (PD 1703): approximately R$ 11.05 million after adjustments and amendments.
  • Stage 2 (PD 2303): about R$ 2.5 million after adjustments and amendments.

Actions in 2023

In January 2023, the remote measurement campaign began with the installation of equipment with “Lidar” – Light Detection and Ranging technology at sites located in the north of the state of Minas Gerais. The remote measurement device was repositioned at least twice during the current year in order to validate the measurements of the traditional weather towers installed at the sites and to confirm the vertical extrapolation calculations of the project’s wind speed. The wind measurement and data collection campaign will end in February 2024. The project’s hybridization calculations were carried out, adding the generation of electricity from solar sources. Also, a workshop was held with the presence of representatives of ANEEL, ONS and CHESF, presenting the main results of the project. Finally, the consolidation reports of the results of each stage were finalized and the production of the final report on the conclusion of the research project began, which is expected to be completed by the end of the first half of 2024, after the completion of the remote sensing studies.
