With the capacity to meet the consumption of a city with about one million inhabitants, Aliança Energia’s plant consolidates two decades of contribution to regional development
This Tuesday, May 5, the Aimorés Hydroelectric Power Plant completes 20 years of operation. Located in the Rio Doce Basin, the unit is present in the municipalities of Baixo Guandu (ES), Aimorés, Resplendor and Itueta, in Minas Gerais, consolidating itself as an important asset in the Brazilian electricity sector.
With an installed capacity of 330 megawatts (MW), the plant contributes to the country’s energy supply and to the stability of the National Interconnected System (SIN).

Two decades of evolution and efficiency
Since its inauguration in 2006, the trajectory of the Aimorés HPP has been marked by different cycles of operational and management improvement, focusing on the safety of people, the reliability of equipment and process control. The unit maintains operating routines in line with current regulatory and environmental requirements, with continuous monitoring by the competent agencies.
“Over these 20 years, we have reinforced our commitment to safe operation and constant improvement. More than generating energy, the plant is part of the life of the region, contributing to development, respecting the environment and expanding opportunities for local communities”, highlights Adilison Melo, coordinator of the plant.
Development that reaches the community
During the period of implementation of the plant, job opportunities and professional training were generated in the region, especially in activities related to construction and industrial maintenance. Some residents who participated in this process continued to work in the electricity sector after the plant started operating.
For Artur Emanuel Simoura, electrical and electronic O&M technician at Aliança Energia, one of the points that he evaluates as a great benefit for the community was the training of professionals. During the construction period, people, according to him, had the opportunity to qualify in several areas.
“I worked as a rural worker and had a dream: to have a profession. I joined here during the construction of the plant and I had this opportunity to, finally, conquer, in my work portfolio, a profession”.
Over the years, Aliança Energia has also established partnerships with civil society organizations and local institutions, supporting social and environmental initiatives in the surrounding municipalities, in conjunction with public policies and actions already existing in the territory.
“This thought of Aliança Energia to invest and create strategic partnerships within the territory where the Aimorés Hydroelectric Power Plant operates makes local institutions able to reach an increasing number of people served. In this way, Aliança Energia is able to generate a very large social impact in the community where it is inserted”, highlights Fernanda Lopes, a resident of the community and representative of Anjos que Montam, a project supported by Aliança Energia through the Fund for Childhood and Adolescence – FIA.
Operational safety and prevention
As part of the safety routines, the Aimorés HPP carries out periodic siren tests in the municipalities of Aimorés and Baixo Guandu, without the need for mobilization of the population. The initiative is part of the Emergency Action Plan (PAE), which establishes guidelines for the action and operational organization of Aliança Energia, in alignment with national safety and protection policies.
Environmental education and legacy for the future
In addition to energy generation, the Aimorés HPP also leaves an important socio-environmental legacy, the Aliança Energia Botanical Park, in Aimorés.
With about 186 hectares, mostly reforested areas, the space has become a reference in environmental education in the region, offering interactive activities, trails, cultural spaces and educational experiences, being used by schools and institutions in the region.
On May 14, the park completes 17 years of operation and has already received more than 25 thousand visitors, coming from different regions of the country, expanding its influence beyond the Rio Doce Basin and strengthening the connection between community, nature and knowledge.
